Heffalump

Philosophy

  • Heffalump is an emergent, play-based school, focused on learning through creative activities, imaginative play and silly exploration. We offer students a trans-formative social experience in a creative, caring and relaxed environment.

  • In the Heffalump tradition, music and art are at the heart of all learning and are incorporated into the study of a wide range of subjects.

  • Academic foundations in drawing, phonics, letter identification, counting, arithmetic and basic writing skills are taught progressively throughout the year to progressively prepare students for Kindergarten. We structure lessons around your child's specific learning style and skill level, creating a personalized educational experience that is challenging and fun!

Eligibility

  • Children ages 2 years to the start of first grade, no potty training is required.

Parent Involvement

  • Parents participate in two ways. They work in our classroom once per month and provide 30 work hours of additional support over the course of the year.

Here is what students and parents have to say!

On any given day, you will find Craig covered--head to toe—with giggling children and a smile on his face. The children of Heffalump adore Craig, and he is undoubtedly their emotional anchor, continually allowing children to find their joy by cracking jokes and creating playful games. In my particular case, I have a sensitive son who is easily upset. When my son has felt vulnerable or sad, he has sought out Craig for soothing. When he wants to tell a joke or share an object, he turns to Craig. It has been a tremendous relief for me to leave my son Corbin with Craig and my son has grown in confidence and emotional security from being in his care.” Felicia Fahey, Felicia Fahey PhD Educational Consulting

Craig's most important quality is his natural rapport & loving patience with the kids. They feel safe, valued, loved and happy in his presence. My older girl, 7, still talks about him. I work in the resiliency field, doing many trainings for educators, and I can say that Craig has skills in relating to children that often cannot be taught! He is a shining star!” Amy Chen Mills, Co-Director of Center for Sustainable Change

Craig is an awesome teacher! He is kind, funny, relaxed, musical and endowed with a genuine love for kids which is always returned in spades. My son was fortunate to have him as a teacher and I recommend him to anyone. You can quote me on that!” Anja Finseth (Eternal Heffalumper)
